CULTURE

CULTURE

The cultural programme at Swartland Primary School aims to expose all learners to a variety of cultural activities. Therefore, we strive for a large percentage of our learners to participate in cultural activities, ensuring that everyone involved has a positive experience and realises their full potential.

Music Department

Individual instruction during school hours is available for the following instruments:

Music instruction in Piano and Recorder (Grades 2 – 7)
Guitar and Solo Singing (Grades 4 – 7)

Music Theory during school hours is provided by the school’s Music Department staff, namely Mrs Thomas and Mrs Zöllner. Learners are required to pay a fixed quarterly fee.

New applications are communicated to parents at the end of the year. Application forms are made available on Google Forms, as well as advertising them on the school’s D6 communication platform. Following a musical aptitude test taken by all applicants, available spots are filled, and the remaining applicants are placed on a waiting list for the year. As vacancies become available throughout the year, new music learners are admitted.

At the start of the year, a Music Information Evening takes place for all parents of music learners to ensure everyone stays informed about the operations of the Music Department. Learners are enrolled to participate in piano, recorder and solo singing at the Eisteddfod and are registered for UNISA exams in piano, recorder, and music theory.

At the end of the first and third terms, learners’ progress is communicated to parents via a music report. Additionally, at the end of the second and fourth terms, all learners undergo music exams with their respective music teachers. Parents receive a report with the results of these examinations.

In the fourth term, a music evening is presented for parents and interested parties, providing all learners from the Music Department with the opportunity to showcase their talents.

Choirs

The Junior Choir practises in the school hall on Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Choir practises in the school hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Both choirs regularly have the opportunity to showcase their talents at school and in the community.

Speech Choirs

Both speech choirs practise in the Foundation Phase Hall, where they prepare to participate in the Eisteddfod.

Eisteddfod

Swartland Primary School is affiliated with the Wes-Boland Eisteddfod, where our learners are enrolled in various sections. They are prepared for participation in the annual competition by our talented staff. The sections in which to participate include, amongst others:

Music (piano, recorder, solo singing)
Choirs
Prose & Poetry
Literature
Prepared and Unprepared Reading
Speech Choirs
Photography
Handwriting
School Art

Drama

At Swartland Primary School we are excited about our talented acting group. Grade 4 – 7 learners may join to develop their communication skills and self-confidence through theatre. Our main goal is for learners to learn the fundamentals of acting – characterisation, voice work, movement, imagination and theatre etiquette. The actors get the opportunity to develop their talents through the experience of a stage production. The select group represents Swartland Primary School at drama festivals and interschools events.

School Concert

Every third year, the Foundation Phase hosts a school concert, and from time to time, a Whole School Concert is presented where all learners from Grade RR to Grade 7 have the opportunity to participate. The entire staff is involved in the latter.

WOW Game Competition & Spelling Bee

Every year learners have the opportunity to participate in these spelling competitions.
