GRADE 1 – 3
Basic Academic Skills
The aim of teaching in the Foundation Phase is the acquisition and consolidation of the basic skills which will enable learners to enter the Intermediate and Senior Phases confidently. The curriculum lays the foundation of the knowledge, skills, and values essential for learning.
Our academic focus is to provide ample opportunities for our learners to build a solid, broad foundation in each of the core subjects, such as Afrikaans or English Home Language, Mathematics, First Additional Language and Life Skills. With this goal in mind, learners have abundant opportunities to explore, understand and master their basic skills.
We emphasise thinking and reasoning that lead to understanding, rather than mere memorisation, challenging learners to think outside the box and broaden their appetite for knowledge. Our assistants and interns make a significant contribution in this regard.
Support
Academic support takes the form of extra classes facilitated by the class teachers. Parents are notified by letter, which they must sign, that a learner has been invited to such a session.
Communication
Communication from the school is primarily done through the school’s “D6 Connect,” which you can download on your cellphone and computer. The system will alert you to any changes in the schedule or urgent matters you need to be aware of. The “D6 Connect” is the core source of information at Swartland Primary School.
Only the Foundation Phase communicates via one-way Whatsapp groups.
